USAChuck and the land of opportunity

For a few months about 30 years ago, I lived in a little town called Wanaka, New Zealand for a snowboard season. It was my first time spending any real length of time outside the United States. New Zealand is incredible. The mountains are amazing, the people are friendly, and it's one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. something happened while I was there. The locals started calling me "USA Chuck." I was the only American in town, and I was constantly defending the States whenever someone wanted to compare countries. It was all in good fun, but I wore the nickname with pride.
When the season ended, I flew back home. I still remember walking through U.S. Customs after a long flight. The customs officer looked up, stamped my passport, smiled, and said, "Welcome home." Above him was a giant American flag.
It's hard to explain, but that moment has stayed with me ever since. I've never been more proud to be an American.
Fast forward a few decades, and that feeling hasn't changed.
Grit Knives exists because of the opportunities this country gives people willing to take a chance.
I wasn't born into the knife industry. I was broke as a joke. I wasn't a machinist or a bladesmith. I was a graphic designer with a camera, a branding background, and a love for hunting, the outdoors, and well-made gear.
Somewhere along the way, those worlds collided. One idea became a logo. The logo became a product. The product became a company. Today, I get to sell gear, build products I'm proud of, work with customers all over the country, and spend time in the places that inspired this business in the first place.
That's not something I take for granted.America isn't perfect. No place is. But I still believe it's the greatest country in the world because of the freedom to build something from nothing. To take an idea that exists only in your head and turn it into something real. Every time I head into the mountains, package an order, or sit down behind my workbench, I'm reminded how lucky I am to do what I love.
So here's to big ideas, public land, hard work, second chances, and a country where someone can combine graphic design with a passion for the outdoors and somehow end up running a knife company. Not a bad deal.
