When Your Customers Find a New Use

Sometimes you make a product with one purpose in mind, and your customers show you something completely different. That's exactly what happened with the MatClips XL.
I originally designed the larger MatClips as a heavy-duty pair of nail clippers. Simple, compact, and easy to carry. But after they had been out in the world for a while, I started noticing something I didn't expect. Anglers were buying them to cut fishing line.
At first, I thought it was just a coincidence. Then I started hearing from more people doing the same thing. Eventually, I realized these weren't just nail clippers to a lot of fishermen. They were becoming part of their fishing gear.
That's one of the best parts of making products yourself. You get an idea, build it, put it out there, and then see what people actually do with it.
So I decided to try something. IÂ made a small trial run of the MatClips XL Steelhead Edition.
It's essentially the same MatClips XL that people have been using, but this version is built specifically around the fishing crowd. It features a steelhead graphic with Grit Knives branding, a steel head, and a Hunter orange lanyard that makes it easier to keep track of on the water.
I'm calling this one an experiment.
I don't know yet if the Steelhead Edition will become a permanent part of the Grit Knives lineup. That's the whole point of a trial run. I'm putting a small batch out there, seeing what people think, and letting the people who actually use them help decide where it goes next.
It's a pretty good example of how products evolve. And sometimes the next product is hiding in the way people are already using the one you made. We'll see where this one goes.
