Small Enough to Change Overnight
One of the biggest advantages of running a small company is that if something isn't working, I don't have to wait six months for a committee meeting or next year's product cycle. I can fix it.
The Ventana has become one of my favorite knives for processing game. It's lightweight, holds an edge, and makes quick work of breaking down an animal. But there was one thing that kept bothering me.
The original Field Version sheath.
It did its job well, but it was bulky. It made sense if you kept it in the truck or around camp, but when I started carrying it in my backpack, it felt like more than it needed to be. Every time I packed for a hunt, I found myself thinking the same thing: There has to be a better way.
Last night I dug through my box of leather scraps and started experimenting. No blueprint or production schedule. Just an idea and a workbench. After a few hours of cutting, and tinkering, I came up with a completely different concept, a lightweight vegetable-tanned leather sheath that securely locks the knife in place with a simple button strap. It carried flatter, weighed less, and felt like the sheath the Ventana should have had from the beginning.
Then I did something I've learned to trust over the years.
I went to bed.
There's something about letting an idea sit overnight. This morning I walked back into the shop, looked at yesterday's prototype with fresh eyes, and made a handful of improvements. Within a few hours, I had the finished version sitting on my bench.
That's the advantage of being small.
When there's a better solution, I don't have to wait for permission. I don't have to sell through old inventory before making a change. I can build it, test it, improve it, and put it into the hands of hunters almost immediately.
The new Ventana Field Version now comes with this upgraded handmade American vegetable-tanned leather sheath, along with a field sharpener, leather strop, and polishing compound. It's a complete field kit, but now it's lighter, cleaner, and built the way I always wanted it to be.
Sometimes the best product updates don't happen in a boardroom.
Sometimes they happen with a pile of leather scraps, a late night in the shop, and the willingness to keep making something better. FYI....Because the changes happened so quick I haven't quite worked out the packaging so it comes in two boxes.
