The Little Sur Steak Knives: A Year in the Making
Share
Some projects take a little longer than others. This one has been rattling around in my head for over a year, and I'm finally getting somewhere with it. Meet the Little Sur, my new six-pack of steak knives.
I've been working on the knives themselves, but I also wanted to make something to carry them in. That means handmade leather knife rolls, built to hold all six knives in one tidy package. I'm using some really nice leather and keeping the natural, raw edges wherever I can. Rather than hide every edge and turn everything into a perfectly polished piece of factory-looking leatherwork, I like the character that comes with the material.
The rolls are all hand-stitched, and let me tell you, they take some time. There's a lot of work in these, and I'm still figuring out the best way to make the process efficient without cutting corners on quality. That's the tricky part when you're making things by hand. You want to make something special, but you also have to figure out how to make it without spending the rest of your life in the shop.
I'm still working out the pricing and a few other details, including whether to offer the knives individually, as a six-pack, or as a complete set with the leather roll. I'd like to have a few available for Christmas, but I don't want to promise anything until I've got the details sorted out.

The photos here show the very first set, made at the request of one of my favorite customers. It's pretty satisfying to finally see an idea that's been sitting in the back of my mind for more than a year turn into something real.
This is just a sneak preview. I've still got some work to do, but I'm getting there.
Happy Trails,
Chuck
